Tom Johnson and Nancy Kegan Smith In A Conversation About Lady Bird Johnson

Zoom Meeting

FLARE is pleased to announce our first virtual program--a conversation with Tom Johnson moderated by Nancy Kegan Smith-- on July 29th at 4:00 EDT. Myra Gutin, President of FLARE will welcome and introduce the program.

Tom Johnson served as chief executive officer of two of America's leading news organizations, CNN and The Los Angeles Times. In 1965, at the age of twenty-four Tom was chosen as a White House Fellow and assigned to press secretary Bill Moyers. The White House Fellowship led to a series of positions on the staff of President Johnson, including deputy to press secretary George Christian, special assistant to the president, and executive assistant to the former president. Tom knew and worked with Mrs. Johnson throughout the White House years and during his many years of distinguished service as both Chairman and member of The Lyndon Baines Johnson Foundation Board of Trustees.

Nancy Kegan Smith, Vice President of FLARE, started her archival career at the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library in Austin, Texas. While working there she got to know Mrs. Johnson and worked on processing some of her files. Nancy currently writes and lectures on Lady Bird Johnson and other first ladies. This interview will focus on Lady Bird Johnson's projects as first lady, her advice to her husband on various thorny issues, and how her efforts were impacted by the turmoil and tragedies that occurred in the 1960s.

Questions are welcomed from the audience at the end of this program. This FLARE program is open to the public.
